The Rainbow Road Hallway Mural

This little hallway… oh man. This piece was difficult for many reasons, but was so worth the struggle. I wanted something BOLD and full of color for this space, as well as a wall of mirrors opposite the design for the sake of reflecting more color into the adjoining rooms. What I also realized was how much light the mirrors pulled in from my font room, which yields the most sunlight. In the mornings, the hallway with no windows of it’s own is flooded with light that spills into my alley-facing, dark kitchen.

Beyond figuring out the complex design in a way that would work well in my strangely shaped hallway, the stripes themselves were temper-mental on my cheaply painted NYC apartment walls. The white paint beneath was ripping up easily and lots of touch ups had to be made, but in the end it became the most impressive piece in my whole space.

I think my favorite aspect of the design, which I love sharing with those who ask, is about the color selection. At this point in my apartment decorating process, I did not want to go picking new colors or buying more paint. I decided to work with what I already had at home, which included colors from every other room in the apartment! Yellow from the bathroom, black from the kitchen, blue and red from the bedroom, pink and orange from the living room.

Being the central hub and connection point of my home, bringing in every color from the rest of the apartment felt like the right answer. It ties the space together and connects each room to each other through color and space and light. Now who wants one of their own?!
